Necessities

By Kristen

My American purchases I never knew I needed:

FLAT sparkly work shoes.

Unless I need to wear heels (height = confidence and power – my friend T taught be this) I will be wearing these gems to the office.

Where I will be STANDING.

My office chair is rarely in use. My European walking / moving / standing all day self cannot sit 8 hours a day. I am short. My desk is tall. My hands reach the keyboard just fine.

SWIFFER!

I seriously don’t know how the European world survives without this single most efficient cleaning tool.

$3.99 are you out of your mind?

This impulse Ikea purchase has been invaluable. When moving back I was bound and determined not to collect “stuff.” However, I do need to pack my work lunch and store my leftovers. Thank you Sweden for your 17 piece green plastic-ware set that matches my olive and cherry painting.

Ripped in … seriously?

I am easing back into my running game. I wake extra early to workout before I hit the office and I am working Jillian into the mix.

I fell in love with Jillian through her podcast. We became good friends (along with Janice) on our walks around Madrid. I must say I love the short – straight forward – no thinking – no nonsense workout video. Go ahead Jillian, you have 30 days.

Chocolate!

This is not American – and is actually a staple in my Spanish life too. This.exact.chocolate. Some things translate to every country and every continent. The darker the better.

And one thing I DON’T need: New work pants.

Let’s take a look – Avert your eyes from the sparkle and focus on the pencil pants:

Allow me to explain:

Yes, yes I did. Thanks to my mother’s sewing expertise [and patience - because teaching me to sew is definitely test in patience] I made my wide-legged trousers into cropped pencil pants.

  • 1. Turn wide pants inside out.
  • 2. Lay a pair of pencil pants on top and pin the wide pants where you want the new seam to be.
  • 3. Using a sewing machine – sew the new seam.
  • 4. Try on the pants to make sure your calves will fit.
  • 5. If happy, cut off the excess fabric.
  • 6. Pin pants at the bottom for new hem length.
  • 7. Sew straight around the bottom.
  • 8. Turn pants right-side-out and wear to work the next day with sparkle shoes.

** If you have questions see the above diagram. [Because that will clearly answer all your questions.]

I have to admit I am pretty pleased with myself. Only two weeks back and I am upping my fashion game, sewing my own clothes, and efficiently working towards really clean floors. Oh, and I’m only 18 days away from that ripped bod.

I am a new reader and love your blog. Your european escapades are interesting but I am even more excited to see you in FL and what your adventures will be. I just moved my husband and two kids to a city outside Orlando so I will enjoy seeing your Florida recommendations as it looks like you are from here! Best wishes getting settled.

Hi Jennifer!

Thank you so much for reading! I too can’t wait to see what I get into around these parts :) Yes, I am from Orlando so it’s all familiar. If you need any specific recommendations ask away!

Thank you again!

You’re so crafty. I don’t dare alter my own clothing!

I used to love, love love my swiffer, however now most of our house is carpet. Also, I definitely added chocolate back into my diet like 3 weeks early. Hope you are doing wonderfully :)

Oh carpet! I don’t even know what I would do with a vacuum :) But if I had a Dyson vacuum I just might put carpet in. Those things are serious.

The chocolate is a serious addiction. 3 weeks early can’t hurt! Things are wonderful :) Hope the same for you!

I love the look of heels but only wear them to church, being comfortable is key. Love that you sewed your own pants. I always accumulate a pile and then bring it to my mom. Sewing is really hard, at least for me.

Heels have become a nightmare! I used to wear them all the time. However, I believe my feet have been in a heel twice in the last 2 years. Now my feet are spoiled. They don’t want to go back. :)

My mom is an excellent seamstress! She is willing to teach me – but I have to do it. These days she takes her own stuff to professional.

Oh man I love the Swiffer! And I love what you did to your pants– I saw a similar tutorial to turn “regular” jeans into skinny jeans on Pinterest, but I hadn’t thought to make my too-long too-wide work pants into cute cropped pants! Great idea Kristen. Just need a sewing machine… (and some of your mother’s skills ;).

I think I saw that same tutorial on Pinterest! I couldn’t remember where I saw it. Yes, the sewing machine is key. The project would not have happened without it… or my mom. :) She’d be happy to teach you too!

Yay! Love the wardrobe updates! Those sparkly flats are awesome. I am also more than impressed with the pencil pants. Also, how did people clean floors before the swiffer? Mopping is the pits.

Thanks Chaaron! The pants were a fun project. Well, now that I am wearing them… not when I kept messing up sewing machine.

I can attest to the pit what is mopping… we have a actual mop and bucket in Spain. Hadn’t seen one in years. :)

Hope all is well with you!!!

I cannot sit for 8+ hours a day either…sometimes I put my laptop on the counter and end up standing up for hours! It’s pretty strange but so necessary.

And Lindt is the best. I love their dark chocolate!

I do the SAME THING! Laptop + counter… for hours. I can’t really sit down until the end of the day. I’m glad I’m not the only one :)
